Each day in California parents send their children to school to prepare them for life. At the end of 13 years, a huge fraction of these students will not be ready. Everyone knows what the unprepared students will look like. It is tragically predictable.

What is wrong?  Does the school system itself make success impossible?  A huge number of reform ideas begin with the premise that the public school system itself stands in the way of good results.
